Speedmarket Avenue | “Way Better Now”

Speedmarket Avenue | The Donnybrook Writing Academy

You aren’t going to need any help finding reasons to love Speedmarket Avenue’s debut single, “Way Better Now,” but I’ll give you some anyway. These Swedish indie-poppers are signed to one of the best truly independent labels in the world, Spain’s Elefant Records, with their first record, Way Better Now, slated for a May 6th U.S. release.

With a sound that calls to mind fellow countrymen The Shout Out Louds and Caesars Palace, Speedmarket Avenue performs songs with an energy that borders on pop-punk (but is far too melodious to be classified anywhere near it). The low budget video for “Way Better Now” places the band in an aquarium and features a band member riding a zebra. Sorta.

Check out the video and be one step ahead of your peers in the spot-the-next-hot-band-from-Sweden competition we know you’re playing:

[...] The Donnybrook Writing Academy points to the new song from Speedmarket Ave. and wins the “we discovered the next hot band from Sweden” award. [...]

You do realize that Speedmarket has been around for several years and have released an album, singles and several EPs? Of course you do.

You’re absolutely right, Andreas–their record for Elefant will be their sophomore full-length. I stand corrected. This was their debut single for Elefant, not their first single.

However, this is their first record to be made available through a major distributor (Darla) in the United States. They also have two other EPs, a handful of compilation tracks, and a split 7″ with Saturday Looks Good to Me.

…except that the new Speedmarket Avenue CD sounds like a completely different band–for the better! WBN is so much more polished than their earlier material and lovingly produced. This, Marching Band, and the new Camera Obscura are my main spins now–and likely will be for awhile.
