The Donnybrook Writing Academy

Last night was Slim Cessna’s Auto Club at the Aggie with Give ‘Er Hell and Munly opening. He had two people onstage wearing three-foot-tall cone-shaped hats and two people with some kind of burlap sacks or cloth completely wrapped and tied around their heads. They were playing drums and creepy organ/piano things while Munly sat in a chair in the middle and sang and played acoustic guitar. He was hatless and clean-shaven and was actually the most normal looking person onstage, which is certainly a rare feat.

Slim Cessna himself and Munly both took the stage, along with the rest of the Auto Club, sans cowboy hats, a rare occurance for this particular duo of frontmen. Slim sported a black baseball hat and his signature brown Western shirt while Munly was clad head-to-toe in his trademark black. The pair, backed by several of the best local musicians around, including Dwight Pentacost on the double-neck (!) guitar, seemed even more energetic than usual, if possible. At one point, Cessna hopped offstage and joined the crowd, to the surprised delight of those who happened to be standing in his path. It was a night of music and redemption, as Cessna and Munly yodeled and howled and fell to the floor and were resurrected. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Slim Cessna’s Auto Club is the best live show in town. Bar none.
