11th Annual UMS: Day 1
Written by Father Guido Sarducci IV // July 22, 2011 // It's Alive, Music, The Conservatory // No comments
Last night was so much fun. I didn’t expect to stay out to the end on the first of four nights, but shit, I wasn’t going into the office today.
Of course, we started with a free beer at Double Dutch Salon. Hey Double Dutch, you’re cute. Thanks for hosting the press fucks like us.
I downed my beer quick because I wanted to see Sweet Tooth Meat Tooth. Hey STMT, when did you guys go from side project to vanity project? I fell in love with you when it was just Hayley & Doug. No, I’m just joshing you. You guys are great, just don’t quit your day band.
Anyway, here’s some pics from the first night of what is sure to be the best UMS ever. Photos are by Angora Holly Polo and Gera “Momma G” Brown.
Izcalli: I hear these sexy, spanish singing kids moved here from Mexico. I wouldn’t know, I don’t speak spanish. But I do speak, “Hey there cute bass player.”
Club 404 Sound Guy: Best. Sound Guy. Ever.
Amazing Twin: This guy used to write in these pages under the name Ankertill Brewer. Now he fucking kills shit on stage with.

Graffiti Behind Club 404: Look at the cool shit you can find while smoking doobies in the alley.
Hot White: The name says it all. Well OK, I guess it doesn’t tell you how they melt faces.

Wire Faces: We had missed what might have been thee show of the evening (Gauntlet Hair at Hi-Dive) because we were getting our faces melted all the way up at Club 404. However, everyone recommended we stick around for these guys. After watching half the set, I’m not sure why. Is it the singing drummer? He was a wild man. PS. Angora says sorry for blinding you paparazzi style. She had never used this camera before.

Nathan & Stephen Or is it Hearts of Palm? It’s a shame we didn’t get better pictures of this band, but it’s because the crowd was packed. Ya know why? Because these guys are the real deal. I forgot how much I absolutely love these songs. Hey guys, play more shows you bastards! Every song is like an anthem. I especially love that whether the songs are happy or sad, the music is always nostalgic. When they sing “Hello dear old friend/It’s nice to see you back again/How has your life been/And how much trouble are you in?” I just felt like hugging all my friends. This was doable, since so many friends were in attendance.

Ha Ha Tonka: Whoa!!! I wasn’t planning on staying this late but boy am I glad we did. This show was so good. They even broke it down all “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?” style half way thru the set. The crowd knew all the words. They even got encored!!!! So much fun honky-tonk.
