Day Twenty

Once upon a time, approximateIy one month ago, I was having a spirited discussion with my boyfriend about how many band T-shirts I actually own. He told me that I had so many, I could wear a different one every day for a year. I disagreed, so we decided to finally figure it out, once and for all. Highly scientific calculations ensued, and it was determined that there are around 180. Only half a year’s worth (see, that’s not a crazy amount…right?). Somehow, this all led to the idea of me wearing a different T-shirt every day for a month (or 30 days).

I booked this band, alaksa!, which includes Imaad Wasif and Kevin Rutmanis (of the Melvins) to play a show at the former Starlight, in Fort Collins CO. I wrote an email to the band’s generic email address and asked if I could book them, and Imaad himself wrote me back and said they’d play for a small guarantee if I didn’t tell their booking agent. One of my friends volunteered to put them up and cook them a spaghetti dinner. I remember them being really grateful and excited for the home-cooked meal. In my experience, that’s pretty typical among national touring musicians. It must be terrible to travel so far in a cramped van just to eat unfamiliar food and stay with strangers. Imaad was awesome, though. He is defintely way skinnier than I am, and I am pretty skinny for a girl my age, (or so I’ve been sold). Since then, he has played on Lou Barlow‘s 2009 album “Goodnight Unknown,” along with Dale Crover of the Melvins, and toured as a guitarist with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. He is currently touring solo and will play live at the Ogden on July 28th with The New Pornographers and The Dodos.
