Grieves | “My Girlfriend Beats Me”
My friend became a rapper. If you’ve ever experienced such a phenomenon, I think you’d agree with me that it’s quite the turn of events. One day you’re young and completely void of ambition, smoking pot out of aluminum cans at very straightforwardly-titled teen hangouts like “the Path” or “the Dam” or “the Spot”; you’re even present for his first-ever birthday strip tease, then several years whoosh by and suddenly he’s bigger, famous-er, and rappier, constantly touring the country and calling you “beeyatch” on the phone, his Myspace page front-loaded with pre-teen girl worship. Come to think of it, the potential for rapperdom was always there for him, by oh my, does it bring a tear to the eye. They just grow up so quickly.
I won’t bore you with his real name or past – that’s for when he gets even bigger, and then I can really ruin his street cred. At least his real name is better than Marshall Mathers.
Without further adieu, I bring you the video for “My Girlfriend Beats Me,” featuring Grieves. He’s the one in the nerd getup. Check him out at the Marquis tonight performing with (Basementalism Presents!) Mac Lethal. I hear we’re getting an mp3 soon, but I’m too impatient to wait – keep an eye out for it here.
