Kitty Crimes: Yogue Out

Stealing Hearts and Sun Salutations

Need something amazing to fill your Sunday? Check out the latest rap yoga vid on the web (are there others?) courtesy of Denver’s own Kitty Crimes.

Also known as Maria Kohler, Kitty Crimes is hip-hop alter-ego to her stints performing with of Denver raunch mavens Harpoontang. But don’t let the yoga-focused rhymes or appearance on “Carpe Carne” make you question her seriousness about what she does. A quick tour of her tracks proves that Kohler is a legitimate artist through and through. Cuts like “Penny” bely not only rap skills that are not to be trifled with, but also production sensibilities that will kick your brain in the ear. (Yes, you heard that right—she does her own beats and production.)

Grabbing influences from James Blake and Mykki Blanco, Kohler puts together some of the best hip-hop mixes that I’ve heard in recent months period, not even mentioning locally. Picture Peaches with better lips, production, and a 1,000% chance that she’s not a burn-out has-been.

Watch the music video on Youtube, find more  tracks on her Soundcloud, and keep an eye peeled for upcoming shows. Kitty Crimes is poised to steal the spotlight, but she’ll probably steal your heart too.

I would say that Maria’s main gig is M & the Gems: http://mercuriaandthegemstars.bandcamp.com
And don’t forget Science Partner: http://sciencepartner.bandcamp.com/

Good catch Kyle, should’ve mentioned them. She’s almost got too many projects to keep track of
