Robin McKelle | “Abracadabra”

Robin McKelle and her version of “Abracadabra” are discombobulating. It is an anachronistic chunk of big band swing in an era of drum machines and lyrics about conspicuous consumption. It is a song your grandmother would like. It is–yes indeed–a cover of the Steve Miller Band’s 1982 hit. It is sung by a white (really?) 30 year old (huh?). None of which detracts in the slightest bit from the fact that this is a brilliant song that comes off with such ease it is tough to realize how much work must have gone into both the arrangements and vocal performance.

Check out “Abracadabra” and then Indian-give your mom a copy of McKelle’s new CD Modern Antique for Mother’s Day on May 11th.
