Snobcast: For Fans of Kazoos

Behind this week’s Snobcast:

Note to opening acts: Kazoos are a sure way to steal a show from a headliner, just ask the Spinto Band. Even more effective if the headliner is a chad band.

It seems that The New Pornographers weren’t the only Canadians to be snubbed at this years PLUG Independent Music Awards on March 6th. Emily Haines, Sunset Rubdown, The New Pornographers, Caribou, Chromeo, A-Trak, Fucked Up and Holy Fuck all went home empty handed.

Not one but two of this weeks bands, aforementioned Spinto Band and Modest Mouse, have been declared “modernized Talking Heads devotees.”

Members of Neutral Milk Hotel can be found playing on new album by old “English eccentric” Kevin Ayers.

Though the lo-fi rock of the Mountain Goats is great for the winter’s insensible grasp, I think I’ll rock John Darniell’s new album this spring too.

In the interest of protecting Canadian interests: The PLUG Awards is the biggest joke in the independent music world. The whole thing is manufactured–under an exceedingly thin veil–by a music promotion and management firm called World’s Fair, whose artists always win their categories. Always. The only time one of their represented artists (or one of the artists from a label they help manage) doesn’t win is when the category doesn’t allow for it.

It’s brilliant, really. It’s like if Matador Records threw an annual, third-party indie music award show and, gee, all of their artists won awards!

People who say bands like The Spinto Band or Modest Mouse remind them of Talking Heads need to take their heads out of their asses, put some headphones on, and listen to their discography. Nothing against either of those bands, but no one who has seriously listened to Talking Heads’ recorded output would make that connection, apart from making a feeble attempt to sound cool.

This is one of my favorite Snobcasts. It’s mind blowing. The first few songs especially – that New Pornographers one is amazing. I like this one, the Bon Iver one, and the British Sea Power ones the best.
