Snobcast: Cyborg Umbrella

2008… the year for Hipster-hop?

Maybe. I’ve been thinking about and using that term for a while (about a year now) and I was only a little surprised to see Blender use the hipster-hop phrase to describe the scene bubblying up in places like Chicago, Baltimore and NY.

Last year we saw hipster cred permeate into all levels of hip-hop: mainstream (Kanye), gangsta (Lil Wayne) and indie (Santogold). Meanwhile, the Hood Internet DJs are forcing the marriage of genres through exquisitely produced mash-ups of your favorite guilty pleasure (Rihanna‘s “Umbrella”) with your favorite next big thing in the indie-sphere (Menomena, CSS, Chromeo, ect.). Not all of what DJ ABX and STV SLV experiment with works on subsequent listens, but for the most part the Hood mash-ups are mature when compared to the 50cent-vs.-Queen mash-ups of yesteryear.

That brings me to the structure of this weeks Snobcast. I’ve got four Hood bangers interspersed with a little old-school (DJ Jazzy Jeff), a little new-school (DJ Khaled), and those that bridge the gap (Ghostface Killah). Throw your fuckin’ arms in the air! Hipsters!

Catch the Hood Internet DJs at the Monolith SXSW showcase.
