The New Frontiers | “Black Lungs”

There was a time when bands like Old 97s and Wilco could be relied upon for a steady alt-country fix and when you couldn’t stop Teenage Fanclub and The Cosmic Rough Riders from dropping indie pop gems. With those days behind us, you’ve got to look hard for acts that straddle that divide, hungrily chomping down on The Broken West and now, The New Frontiers.

On April 28th, The New Frontiers released Mending, a surefire Top Ten contender for 2008. It’s so good, it almost makes us care about Ryan Adams again…except that it’s so good it makes us not care. Singer Nathan Pettijohn is everything you could ask for in a vocalist: sincere, emotional, yet intelligently composed. His coterie of Dallas-based musicians provide impeccable accompaniment, painted with wilting slide guitars and churning percussion.

Ryan who?
