1. Lucero coozie
If you are not familiar with Memphis-based alt-country legends Lucero, I’m not sure I want to know you. Check out this amazing coozie that will not only keep your beverage of choice cold but will also set you back LESS THAN FIVE DOLLARS! Can you even get anything for that cheap anymore? Nothing good, anyway. Note the awesome double-sided-ness, which means you have options about how to express your impeccable taste in music, depending on which way you hold your bevvy. Also, we hear it comes in camo now too, so be sure to keep your eye on your drink so it doesn’t become invisible on you.
2. “Next Analog Broadcast,” a book of poetry by Charly “the city mouse” Fasano
This book just came out last month and will only set you back ten dollars. If you are not familiar with the city mouse, you should be. He’s a local treasure who writes gorgeous, thought-provoking poems, mostly about our fair city. He’s got a couple of books and some spoken word-type recordings available, if you’re lucky enough to stumble across them. You can also find a good selection of them for sale at Fast Geek Boutique (321 w. 11th Ave.). Most of them will cost you less than one crappy “gourmet” coffee drink. Several of his spoken word recordings feature backing instrumentals from the likes of local favorites Drag The River, Red Cloud West, Roy Berry of Lucero, and many, many others. Go to one of his readings. Your life will be better afterwards.
3. Ume’s “Sunshower” EP
This Austin-based power trio shreds harder than one million angry cats. Harder than the really big industrial shredder at the recycling plant. Harder than…your face? Yet vocalist/lead guitar shredder Lauren Larson’s Kim Deal-esque, pixieish (no pun intended) vocals are whisper-soft and sugar sweet. What combo could possibly be better? Bonus: attend a live show and watch her five-foot tall frame flail around onstage as she totally dominates her Fender while hubby/bassist Eric Larson holds down the low end and new addition drummer Rachel Fuhrer makes hitting the skins look easy. Buy their “Sunshower” EP on GOLD vinyl for ten bucks NOW, since only limited quantities are left. Their new full-length, “Phantoms,” drops on Modern Outsider Records on August 30th.
