UMS 2013 – 5 PICKS FOR THURSDAY

We will spotlight five bands to check out each day at the UMS. Now all of this is dependent upon the BAC-level of the staff after the end of each night of the UMS. Sure we should be doing all of these ahead of time but where’s the fun in that? That’s not very rocknroll now is it!

1. CALDER’S REVOLVER – Thurs 9pm IRISH ROVER

Calder’s Revolvers has honed their unique blend of indie rock, soul and R&B since forming in 2009 with drummer Sam Gault, guitarist Brad Johnson, vocalist Andy Schneider, and bassist Cole Strain. Their debut full-length LP “Steady By Your Side” was released in September 2012 and won reader’s choice for Best New Recording in Westword’s Best of Denver. (via UMS)

2. THE JEKYLLS   Thurs 9pm ILLEGAL PETES

What happens if you mix two Hollyfelds, two Railbenders and a Sunday Girl?
You get The Jekylls, a 60’s style pop group from Denver.

Formed the summer of 2011, The Jekylls have been making quite an impression on the Denver music scene. The Jekylls feature Eryn Hoerig on lead vocals and tenor guitar, Tony Asnicar on lead guitar, Graham Haworth on drums, Keith Hoerig on bass, & Jody Rodney on backing vocals & various.

The Jekylls have opened for national acts including Los Straitjackets, Allison Krauss, JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound, and Clairy Browne and the Bangin’ Rackettes. They’ve also shared bills with illustrious Colorado acts like the Railbenders, The Hollyfelds, Mama Lenny and The Remedy, New Ben Franklins, Sunday Girl, The Patti Fiasco, and many other fabulous bands. 3. THE BLOOD BOILERS   Thurs 10pm BRENDAN’S 404

We are a loud noisy indie rock band, as the term was used back when it had more to do with punk and straight up rock and roll and less to do with pop, precision, and clean production. Hailing from Denver, we borrow elements from previous bands we’ve played in through the years (the Emirs, Acrobat Down, O’er the Ramparts, El Espectro, Blastoff Heads, DeNunzio, Brougham Royale, etc.). Glasses, grey hair, beer and tight pants….well, tight waistbands. What we got epitomizes Rock and Roll. (via UMS)

4. BONNIE AND THE BEARD   Thurs 11pm ILLEGAL PETE’S

They began playing together after spending a hazy summer writing as the old, dusty cowboys they admired. Wandering through canyons and sharing fireside meals with their wolf dog, their stories of reckless rebels began to pour into rousing and passionate songs. They’re almost a wheelin’ dealin’ circus band. Their raw energy and husky voices conjure up images of open desert road, nights under the stars and rusty Cadillacs.

“Bonnie and the Beard possess a sound that is both sweet and sultry yet still raw and rawkus. Combining a bit of delta blues with indie-rock sensibilities, Bonnie and Beard sing about the struggle of human existence with the pipes to knock the dust off the highest rafters of any smoky bar.”

5. FAT TONY   Thurs 11:59pm BLUE ICE

Fat Tony stands at the forefront of new generation of young rappers who get it themselves—a DIY hustler who’s built his burgeoning career on a foundation equal parts smarts and swagger. The Houston MC owns the mike with a casual confidence, workmanlike in his delivery whether laidback or lyrical, embodying a new brand of enlightened Southern that’s as likely to tip back some lean on your front porch as sit down and school you on Dadaism. Through his simmering solo work and boundary-busting collaborations with Das Racist and A$AP Rocky, among others, Fat Tony has already launched a legacy.

As a first-generation Nigerian-American raised in his city’s historic Third Ward, heritage has always been important to Fat Tony. One of his earliest memories is of a parade of black cowboys riding down the local main street on MLK Day, blaring the good doctor’s speeches over zydeco tracks. His childhood home was filled with records—King Sunny Adé and Jimmy Cliff from his father’s collection, his mother’s jazz and soul, Granny’s gospel. He watched countless hours of music television as a kid, got his first drum kit at 8, and pummeled it to pieces shortly after seeing Nirvana on MTV. (via UMS)
