Sound Bites: An Occasional Inquiry
As orated by Professor Q. Honeydew
This is the first lecture in a series entitled Sound Bites, the
purpose of which is to give you a taste of new releases vis-a-vis a
comparison with their culinary counterparts.
Hot Chip – DJ Kicks
Tastes like: Jambalaya
Indietronic dance pranksters Hot Chip contribute an installment to
the popular DJ Kicks series that matches their playful, propulsive
sensibilities. As with jambalaya, there are comforting elements to
be plucked out of the mix: Ray Charles‘ jiving “Mess Around” is the
tomato, “I Got A Man” by Positive K is the green pepper, and New
Order’s enduring “Bizarre Love Triangle” is undisputably the rice.
Of course, tame ingredients do not jambalaya make, so Hot Chip
responds accordingly with the crayfish of Gramme’s “Like You” and the
dubious sausage of “Jiggle It” by Young Leek (no pun intended).
Ulrich Schnauss – Goodbye
Tastes like: Gelato
Goodbye melts in your mouth and in your hands. It’s like getting
drunk, coming home too late, and sitting down with a pint of fruity
gelato until you pass out all sticky-fingered. Far moreso than on
his previous outings, Ulrich Schnauss seems content to simply ape his
favorite Slowdive tunes here, but nobody does it better. It is
flattery at its finest, all creamy textures and washed out flavors.
Goodbye is barely there when it is but the taste lingers on.
