Vengeful Videorama

Today, Lady Z goes rocky and grungy on our asses!

Deftones- "Hole In the Earth"- First of all- Chino fuckin’ rocks my world.  They’ve managed to retain their original style; this album sounds as desperate and wrecked as Adrenaline.  No one sings like him.  However, there are some problems.  This video is too much like "Black Hole Sun," Black Hole Sun was cooler, though… and two of the band members look like Chris Cornell- one before he cut his hair, and one after.  It occurs to me that this song would be much more amazing if not watched in video, but in my cd player, cuz I don’t have an ipod.  Yeah! Now, that’s fuckin’ hipster.

Foo Fighters- "The Pretender"- I love when this song starts, because Dave’s voice sounds sooo not bound up by space or time.  In the future, our kids will probably worship this band, and we’ll all be telling them about Nirvana and where we were when Kurt died.  I also envision losing much of my Foo love when this song ends up being promoted for major sporting events a la "lets get it started." But until then, we can enjoy this as good, authentic rock and roll.

And with an honorable mention for Soundgarden- Black Hole Sun- just cuz I raised the issue, and because I worship Chris Cornell.  I’ll always remember watching this one over and over and over in sixth grade on MTV, before I became obsessed with Soundgarden and Rage and Offspring.  I don’t know who wins out in the end for best rock vocalist of the 90′s, but here are my top five: Chris Cornell, Chino, Dave Grohl, Kurt Cobain, and Maynard… P.S. I heart pygmie goats.

Man do I love Dave Grohl. I’m always reading these interviews and thinking, “This guy is way cool. I wish I could just hang-out with him all day.” Then I listen to the Foo. I don’t know why I do it to myself but I want to like them. I really do. But when I listen to them all I hear is this generic stadium rock. The thing is, Dave has some great lyrics and all, but it just comes out sounding like (gasp!) Nickelback. Uhg.

ouch… now thats vengeful…Nickleback??? yikes… I’m not sure I agree, but I think “stadium rock” is quite the prophecy…time will tell…

I agree that Dave G is pretty likeable. But in terms of stadium rock and commerical success a la “let’s get it started,” I think they’re there – they live in mansions and such.

I agree with the Black Hole Sun comparison. I, too, watched that video probably eleventy times a day during my “I’m finishing up my homework” moments. I loved the hell outta Soundgarden.

The Nickelback comment, while containing a bit of truthiness, I believe the Foo can do better than that. It does pretty much sound like a song that should be playing when a wrestler walks out.
